First Day Fresh Brings Back to School Energy to Foot Locker
Back to school season is one of the busiest stretches of the year for footwear retail, and Foot Locker wanted to turn that moment into something families would remember. First Day Fresh was a multi-city in store brand activation that brought free portraits, games, music, and local vendors into nine Foot Locker stores across seven dates in August and September 2026.
Milestone Media provided a Pop-Up Photo Studio at every stop, giving kids and their families a professional portrait to start the school year. Each event was co-branded with one of Foot Locker’s footwear partners, including On, Adidas, Hoka, New Balance, and Asics, so every photo carried both the Foot Locker name and the partner brand from that day.
Partnering With Trill Multicultural
First Day Fresh was organized by Trill Multicultural, the marketing agency behind several of Foot Locker’s community-focused retail events. Milestone Media has worked with Trill on previous Foot Locker activations, including the Foot Locker Herald Square activation and the Kids Foot Locker Queens pop-up photo studio, so the team came into this program already familiar with the brand standards and the pace of a live store environment.
Trill managed the overall program, vendor lineup, and store coordination. Milestone Media was responsible for the photo experience and games at every location, with one consistent setup from market to market.
“Milestone has been phenomenal. Their team was so gracious in helping us manage nine markets and every change that came with them. We'd honestly be a little lost without vendor partners who say, 'We got your back.' The on-site team was amazing, and it was a really great experience.”
Gabby Serrano, TRILL Multicultural
The Goal: Store Traffic and Community Engagement
The objective was simple: bring families into Foot Locker stores during back to school season and give them a reason to stay. Instead of a standard sale or promotion, First Day Fresh turned each store into a free community event where kids could get a fresh portrait, play games, and enjoy local vendors, all while browsing the latest styles from Foot Locker’s brand partners.
9 Stores, 7 Dates, 5 Brand Partners
Each stop was paired with a single footwear brand, and that brand’s logo was featured on the photo overlay and game decals for the day.
- August 15: Pembroke Lakes Mall, Pembroke Pines, FL (Miami market) with On
- August 16: Perimeter Mall, Atlanta, GA with Adidas
- August 22: Memorial City Mall, Houston, TX with Hoka
- August 22: Greenbriar Mall, Atlanta, GA with Hoka
- August 23: Green Acres Mall, Valley Stream, NY with New Balance
- August 29: Cedarbrook Shopping Center, Wyncote, PA (Philadelphia market) with Asics
- August 29: Westland Mall, Hialeah, FL (Miami market) with Asics
- August 30: Glendale Galleria, Glendale, CA with On
- September 5: Mondawmin Mall, Baltimore, MD with New Balance
Three of the dates ran in two markets at once, with Milestone Media teams operating in separate states on the same day. Every event ran for four hours.
The Pop-Up Photo Studio
The centerpiece of every stop was Milestone Media’s Pop-Up Photo Studio, also known as a Portrait Studio. The setup used a clean gray backdrop provided by the client, paired with professional studio lighting and a DSLR camera to create a polished, editorial look inside the store.
The portraits followed a clean style with no props, letting kids show off their first day outfits and new sneakers. Many parents joined their kids in the frame, which turned the studio into a family moment rather than a quick photo op.
Every photo was finished with a custom overlay featuring the Foot Locker “It Always Will Be” branding alongside the partner logo for that day. Guests received a 4×6 print on the spot and a digital copy texted straight to their phones, making the photos easy to share on social media.
Store employees got in on it too, stepping into the studio at every event for their own team portraits.
Pop-A-Shot and Ping Pong With Branded Decals
Alongside the studio, Milestone Media provided a Pop-A-Shot basketball game at seven of the nine stores. Before each event, the team applied custom decals featuring that day’s footwear partner, so the game matched the rest of the branded experience.
At Cedarbrook Shopping Center and Westland Mall, a ping pong table took the place of the Pop-A-Shot, giving those stores a different kind of friendly competition.
A Full Community Event Inside the Store
Every First Day Fresh event featured a live DJ, keeping the energy up from open to close. Each store also hosted its own mix of local vendors and treats, including:
- Popcorn and cotton candy
- Lemonade stations
- Nail techs and barbers
- Heat press and laser engraving
- Airbrush stations
The combination of music, food, personal services, and the photo studio made each store feel like a neighborhood block party, giving families plenty of reasons to spend time inside.
One Consistent Experience in Every Market
Running nine events in seven states means the experience has to look the same in Houston as it does in Valley Stream. Milestone Media used the same studio layout, lighting setup, print size, and overlay template at every location, swapping only the partner logo for each date.
That consistency gave Trill and Foot Locker a unified look across every market, with photos from Glendale and Baltimore that could sit side by side in the same campaign.
Why a Photo Studio Works for an In Store Brand Activation
An in store brand activation is any experience a brand creates inside a retail space to bring people in, keep them engaged, and connect them with the brand. Retail activation goes beyond product displays by giving shoppers something to do, not just something to buy.
A Pop-Up Photo Studio is one of the most effective retail activation ideas because it delivers a lasting takeaway. Guests leave with a professional print featuring the brand, and the texted digital copy extends that branding onto social feeds long after the event ends. For back to school events in particular, a fresh portrait fits naturally into a moment families already want to capture.
The Results
First Day Fresh brought families into nine Foot Locker stores across the country, with every guest leaving with a branded portrait in hand and another on their phone. The studio became a gathering point at each event, drawing in kids, parents, and store teams alike.
"The goal was for every store to feel like the same premium experience, no matter the city. Seeing families line up for their first day portraits in every market was exactly what we hoped for."
